I apologise for the length of this post but I wanted it to be as clear and concise as possible for all interested. I undertook what is detailed below in good faith to help me, MMC and other Roadster owners. I should point out that I take no responsibility for any issues which may become evident for an ECU fitted to a Morgan Roadster by MMC in the future.

I purchased my 3.7 Roadster last summer, it is the Roadster built early 2013 for the Marfan Charity run to Nordkapp. From early on I have had various discussions with Willams Automobiles, Steve Morris and Mark Evans on the rev hang issue with this model. MMC has now given me permission to let others know what I have been up to, we all agreed to confidentiality as no one wanted to get others hopes up and possible disappointment. For those who do not know me I have owned many powerful cars over 35 years, I have done track days, sprinted and I race in hill climbs, so am a reasonably experienced driver.

Issues as evident on my car with my style of driving was as below:-

1. When accelerating and disengaging the clutch revs would hang causing the vehicle to continues to accelerate on selecting a higher gear eg. 3rd to 4th.
2. If hard acceleration was being used as above the revs would momentarily rise 200-300 rpm.
3. It was possible due to either of the above to loose rear traction on wet or slippery surfaces due to the above.
4. When cruising (say on a motorway) releasing the accelerator to slow down would result in overrun, eg. the car continued at the same speed for several seconds.

MMC had been working on an ECU development for the Aero ARV6, there was an opportunity to possibly develop a simpler solution for a road going 3.7 Roadster requiring just an ECU change. I offered my car to trial this solution once it was ready and MMC were satisfied that testing of it was sufficient to have confidence putting it on a customers car for trail. Prior it was dyno tested on an engine and was run on two other factory cars before mine. The development in my opinion undertaken by MMC and MBE (the ECU developers) for the past 8 months has been significant and has not been simple. The Ford supplied ECU is effectively locked down and as such any replacement has to work in the same format to enable it to interface with the Roadster instruments and engine monitoring systems/sensors. I cannot go into technicalities (which although I work in IT) as I am not skilled in this area, although I do understand the underlying issues to replicate and emulate a replacement ECU which is then configurable.

In early January this year Mark Evans at MMC asked if I was willing to conduct the trail, which I agreed to do. The new ECU was fitted by Chris Bridgens of MMC and setup in conjunction with Jeff of MBE at the factory. Possible measurements were discussed on how to judge its success, and all agreed it would be best for me to monitor and feedback how I felt best, so as to not lead me into any conclusions. I took the following measurements in detail.

Every trip undertaken was measured accurately using a GPS system for mileage and speed.
Indicated Speedometer, Odometer, Mileometer, Average MPG, Economy readout, and Temperature readings were monitored and recorded.
Any performance issues or problems with the car were noted and reported
Fuel consumption was measured accurately on fill ups to ascertain accurate mpg and comparisons with indicated mpg on the car.

Over the next 8 weeks I drove a varying length of trips, on motorways, A roads, local urban driving and to and from work, ranging from a few miles to 160. Conditions varied, dry, wet, and on the edge of icy. When able I pushed the car, accelerating hard to try and induce Rev hang and other issues previously mentioned. At the end over testing over 1700 miles were completed.

Testing Results

1. From day one of the new ECU the Rev hang and points 2 to 4 were gone.

2. Initially the engine would occasionally cut out on start up, this was rectified on the second visit to MMC.

3. I identified anomalies with MPG, Economy meter, Odometer and Mileometer readings against actual. These were addressed and rectified on the 2nd visit to MMC, with changes to the ECU programming.

4. After the second visit to MMC I experienced occasional cutout on slow approach to junctions. This was rectified after the final visit to MMC, by adjustment to ECU cam sensor mapping, an anomaly only experienced on my car to date. This relates to High Tension electrical noise transfer from the HT coil cap nearest Cam 1. MBE informed us that the new ECU has inbuilt filtering and this was tuned to removed the noise for all Cam sensors, they have experienced this before with ECUs requiring a loom harness adapter.

5. After the second visit to MMC I experienced once the car going into limp home mode - fixed 2000rpm (occurs when ECU is confused or unable to get accurate readings). I have been advised this can be forced to occur on any 3.7 Roadster or Mustang if the accelerator pedal is stamped on, effectively switching it from low voltage to high very quickly. It can assume there is a fault and for safety puts the car into limp home mode at 2000rpm. Adjustments and checks were made to ensure that the ECU would react correctly and put the car into limp mode when appropriate.

6. After the 3rd visit of the car to MBE and MMC unfortunately the car went into limp mode once unexpectedly and once deliberately induced by myself. The car returned for a 4th visit on 3rd March to MBE & MMC, after this MMC discussed with Ford and it was established that there are 3 iterations of the ETB(accelerator) and some early Roadsters had the 2nd, the case with my car, this requires slightly less sensitive ECU voltage parameters, and MBE made the required changes. I collected the car on 13 March and have had no limp home mode re-occurrence to date, or any other issues. If I do find any I will report back.

Summary

My final testing has shown that the fuel consumption has not been affected and I believe is as before the ECU change, performance has not been affected and if anything I feel the car is smoother under acceleration and just as quick to respond. My Roadster is now lovely to drive and gear changing can be reasonably quickly, just how it should be in my view. On the final visit to MMC arranged for the car to have an emissions test at a local MOT centre and the car passed. There is one minor issue outstanding, the Economy meter does not work correctly, I am not concerned about this as I do not consider it important on a Roadster, MMC may or may not choose to investigate.

Summing up the Rev hang and other issues 2-4 above are no more, the car is a pleasure to drive and I am now very happy with the way it behaves and is as one would expect. I would recommend that any 3.7 Roadster owner who has the aforementioned issues talks to their main dealer and MMC to get the changes required applied to their Roadster.

In my opinion MMC has undertaken a great deal of work and investment into getting a solution for this problem and some may not appreciate that it was a difficult and challenging thing to do. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Steve Morris, Mark Evans, and all at MMC who worked on my car and Jeff at MBE who worked on the ECU, and the trust they placed in me to do the trial. We all think that the result is good and should be a generic fit for any 3.7 Roadster.

I think that Morgan in conjunction with Aero Racing have come up with a very satisfactory and cost effective enhancement to the 3.7 Roadster.

Final Results

Mark Baldwin on 12 March took my car home and drove around 65 miles round trip and tried to induce the limp home mode and was unable to do so.

Drive home from MMC on 13 March a total of 153.1 mile(GPS), recorded odometer miles 152.9.

This journey involved 90 miles on M5/M4 at 70+mph, and 10-15mins in heavy near stationary traffic, a detour to Williams Automobiles, and the remainder was on A roads at 30-60mph.

Fuel fill up 25.6 Litres or 5.6 gallons, average calculated mpg 27.38. Indicated mpg 30.9. The MPG anomaly I suspect will be due to fill up discrepancy of around 2 litres from when MMC filled the car and I did. Previous recorded fuel usage during the trial has regularly indicated average mpg of 30 to 31.

I also performed several hard acceleration tests in different gears when able, revving the car up to 6500rpm and was unable to induce the limp home mode.

Two further short drives undertaken locally in drier conditions on 14 March and once again under hard acceleration and no limp home mode has been induced.

I am planning to drive my Roadster this coming week to the Exeter Park and Ride using dual carriageway and A roads and will report if I have any issues as a result but I am not anticipating any.

Emission Test Results

Conducted at Malvern Motor Services on 12 March 2015

Fast Idle Test 2500-3000rpm
CO = 0.09 Pass max 0.20
HC = 37 Pass Max 200
Lambda = 1.022 Pass Min 0.97 max 1.030

Natural Idle Test 450-1500rpm
CO = 0.02 Pass Max 0.30

Happy driving drive cheers

Sounds like a great result, well done to MMC, MBE, and you!

I have an MBE ECU in my Ecotec conversion, I can access it with the Easymap software, do you have this feature?

Well done MMC - Really ? THREE YEARS to sort out an ECU problem that shouldn't have been put into production.

Well done Adrian I agree with.

Is it a CANBus ECU? If so, then you can get an adapter from SBD Motorsport, and the software can be downloaded from their website. Install onto a Windows laptop, USB cable to the adapter, plug into your OBD port, and away you go.

You probably won't be able to update parameters yourself, as the ECU will be locked down, but you should be able to read a whole cartload of parameters, and log them whilst driving.

If you're within striking distance of Stroud, you'd be welcome to try my setup to see if it works.

I'm surprised to see that it takes a complete change of the ECU to fix this problem. It confirms that Morgan does not have any access to the ECU. I guess Morgan has tried to motivate Ford do do some modifications.
So the message is that Ford as the supplier of the units seems not to care and wasn't willing to do something about the issue.
It's take it as it is or leave it then, isn't it?

That's sad.

Good work!

Is the Cyclone used in any mainstream Ford over here? If not, it might explain why they are reluctant to do anything to assist - not worth their time/effort.
BMW were, I believe, very helpful regarding retweaking their V8s going into Morgan Aeros... smile

You have to consider that modern cars are in development several years before release and then the development teams move onto new projects, so revisiting becomes out of the question unless absolutely necessary. So when a company like MMC take on a engine, gearbox and ECU for a 3rd party there is an inherent risk unless they are in at the beginning of its development and have the opportunity to try it in their own end solution.

I can think of two reasons:

First, BMW has a history of working with small companies that produce special cars based on their motors, including Morgan, Alpina and I suppose Rolls Royce.

Second, BMW is still a family owned firm that is actually interested in cars and driving. Ford is just a public consumer goods business that makes a product that happen to be cars.

And if you look at it from Fords perspective, the volume of engines being supplied to Morgan probably do not justify the cost in developing a remap.

Adrian,

Many thanks for the write up, the rev hang up has been a proper niggle for me, and while it is possible to drive round it, it detracts much from the experience.

My Roadster is booked into the factory to have the MBE ECU fitted in May, so it's good to hear the back story on the development, testing, results etc.

I think you will like it, my car has sports exhaust and the upper end acceleration seems smoother now and possibly a bit quicker, but very difficult to tell. Let me know how you get on. cheers

No enough to re-program the traction control for the Aero, I believe, which is a much lighter than what the engine etc was originally in.

A sports exhaust is probably on my list, but I need to have a listen to it before making that commitment.
The factory have also offered a lightened flywheel conversion, but I'm going to hold fire on that until I see how the ECU upgrade feels.

I can't comment on the effect of a lightened flywheel for the Roadster, but i had those decades ago in an other car and it was really fun to see, how responsive an engine can get with this easy modification. I machined them myself, down to the ultimate minimum that you need to keep the starter. You can loose some kilogramms that way.

Quick update, very early drive to Exeter P&R this morning, little traffic about so some very hard accelerations to 6K rpm in several gears, and no Limp Home Mode induced joy

So at present all is looking good, i will continue trying for another couple of days, but feeling confident all is good. cheers

Quick report, P&R drive again, enthusiastic nice smell of hot exhaust, tyres and brakes when I parked. All ran smoothly, a few low gear high Rev accelerations and all smooth. drive

Hi,
Clearly much work been completed by all.. With regard to your issue1, does this characteristic remain, or has this fix improved it .

When I first got the Roadster I was frustrated with the revs hanging but I have learnt to drive round it and it does not bother me to much now. That said I would be interested in solving the problem. The issue I have is I like the banging popping on a trailing throttle you get with the current system.

Does the fix remove the banging and popping?

Hi as I said IMHO

"Testing Results

1. From day one of the new ECU the Rev hang and points 2 to 4 were gone. "

You can drive the car normally now without having to think about whether the revs have dropped before selecting the next gear. If you go up to the 6k rpm area then revs drop but not as immediately, but is as I would expect on a powerful raod car. This will be a characteristic of the engine design in conjunction with a heavy dual mass flywheel that has high inertia. The solution is to replace with a lightened solid one, but then this will have two effects, the engine will Rev differently, with a pronounced on/off throttle feel, much like a race car, not what I would want for a road car. The gearbox will take more of a bashing, as the rubber flex in the dual mass taking up judder will no longer be there, so the gearbox will probably not last as long, maybe acceptable in a race car, but not for me.

In answer to the next post.
With respect to the popping banging, it is still present but to a lesser extent I think, it can be induced by feathering the throttle on coasting and then releasing. Same on my Plus 8. I have a sports exhaust so is highlighted. Personally I think this happens on most powerful engines that are highly tuned, mainly due to quick throttle change and excess unburnt fuel being sent down the pipes. I was told that Ford actually said that the holding of revs was to burn it off and meet emmisons. I consider this rubbish and a smoke screen, modern ECUs can switch of injectors in milliseconds and spark, there will always be some unburnt fuel being dumped. I doubt if you would ever totally stop the popping, you could muffle it with a made to measure silencer, but then performance will be impacted, but if you just want to cruise it probably does not matter. I quite like it (the hooligan in me) smile

Fuel used report.

144.5 Miles recorded - Journeys of 20+ miles to & form P&R in Exeter, with some high rev driving to test that all is well with the ECU, Limp Mode was not induced. A general mix of speeds. Not paying particular attention to saving on Fuel.

Fill up 24.43litres or 5.38 gallons

Average MPG recorded 27.4, calculated average mpg 26.85

So I think this is to be expected on this sort of driving and I would expect on a long run cruising at around 70, 30-32mpg. When I next do a long run probably up to TOTH I will let you know what I get.

Hello.
I am very interested in the outcome as i has just changed my 3.0 roadster to 15 plate 3.7 , has anyone else apart from adrian had this done, if so how do you rate it, also is it a simple case of swapping ECU while you wait or more involved.

I believe based on my initial experience it's about a mornings work, maybe less, once fitted I guess it will be checked out on a computer and road tested. I am still very pleased with the result, after the final visit to MBE/MMC no more hiccups, car is probably more powerful than before. All original issues as reported gon. When I get time will take it to a local garage that has a rolling road and tunes race cars, then I can report on torque/bhp. MPG is ok, careful driving 30 mpg, will drop to 27 if being right foot happy, pretty good for a car with around 300bhp.

I wrote to the factory after Adrian's post and had a reply from Mark Evans. His comments were as follows:

1. The company has finished developing the mod and are happy with the results.
2. Only issue they've had is that the spontaneous fuel reading (displayed as a bar) no longer works.
3. Your dealer can fit the upgrade.
4. BHP increases to 300bhp from 285bhp.
5. Price £1,779 + VAT.
6. 320bhp available with a new flywheel for a further £1,415 + VAT
7. This is an upgrade - no contribution from the company under warranty.

I guess you also need to check with your insurance company.

Still thinking about whether to go for it. I'll certainly wait until my Roadster is fully run in and some more to see how the Rev hang issue affects me at full performance. I'd be really interested in the views of anyone who's had it done.

I to spoke to the factory today regarding the upgrade/rev hang remedy but at a cost of £2135.40 will try to get used to it for a bit longer.

"Price £1,779 + VAT." = £2135

Good grief! But why should I be surprised that Morgan have the effrontery to charge so much to remedy a situation they should never have allowed to happen? They are certainly following form.

I'm guessing that a new Omex 710 ECU and relevant mapping could be done for half that price, and, they might have the fuel readout working too.

Why does anybody take their car back to the factory and pay through the nose, to have work done which could be done by many competant businesses dotted around the country, for far less money. Sorry Bumpy not personal.

I am struggling to get my head around this having spoken to Adrian about the issues of rev-hang he had on his 3.7 Roadster.

Please correct me if I am wrong; but a customer will spend £48,000 + on a new Roadster and then have to pay an additional £2135 to get the ecu sorted (sorry "upgraded") to an acceptable standard?

Paul it's not that straight forward, I did some research and talked with various tuners and racers in the USA about the Mustang, they have the same issues though less pronounced due to the weight of the car and also only the GT had a manual box, the ECU being set up for an auto. Some have managed to resolve it and others not, but not cheaply. The situation with the Morgan 3.7 is worse as Ford locked down the ECU and also tied it to the canbus supplied instruments. I talked with a major designer of ECUs in Italy, who supplies a lot of the automotive industry, he said yes it could be overcome but with difficulty.

I don't know if it would be the case with the 3.7 Roadster but the Omex ECU that I have on my car is only an engine management system. It is set up so that all the dashboard functions etc are still run by the original ECU.

OK, I can see the difficulty Adrian, and I think you've done a fantastic job in sorting out the problem, but I don't think that Morgan should profit from the excercise. They are taking the same stance as they did with the Three Wheeler and allowing their customers to do the Beta testing - either the car is fit for purpose or it isn't, and it isn't as if they are giving any of their models away either.

Hi Adrian, if/when you do get power figures, please share.

The upgrade yesterday went smoothly, only two hours labour on the invoice. The major part of the cost is the new ECU (and I have the old one in a box, so perhaps can offset the costs by selling that on?) and two new lambda sensors (again I have the old ones).

Prior to having this done, I rarely took the engine passed 5k rpm, since this showed up the issue, and short shifted at around 4.5k. Now, the weather yesterday was hardly conducive to flat out hooliganism, but the M40 was dry enough in a few places for me to see what's what...and scared wooo... all the torque and power is still there in spades pulling hard up to the redline in 3rd and 4th, but now shifting above 5k feels pucker. This is now a properly great drive, I'm a very happy man!

There is also the opportunity to swap the dual mass flywheel for something lighter, but just from my brief experience yesterday, I'd say this might be a step too far for a road car. There's a natural feel to the revs dropping on backing off the throttle the way it currently is, lightening the flywheel would make this much harsher adding a degree of shunt into the process...

Great to hear from someone else who has had the ECU changed, I am hanging on to my ECU just in case. Your initial findings on the improved drivability are as mine, you can now be much more confident with the right foot and feeling you will be in control when changing up gear at higher revs. On open and quiet roads I can be a bit of a boot boy and before I had several rear end loss of traction due to the Rev hang or slight increase in revs, one which was very unpleasant as I was entering a bend. I would be very interested in your actual MPG figures from a measured fill up against a known mileage measured either on a map or gps. Prior to the final tweak my car was returning around 30mpg on general driving, but is now around 27-28 mpg. Considering the engine is putting out around 300bhp then 27-28 is probably not bad.

I completely agree on the flywheel front, with a lightened one it is very likely to perform more like an one off switch with the power, fine for a race car, but in a car that is already relatively light on the road I suspect it would become a difficult car to drive and possibly unpredictable for a less experienced driver. Maybe a step too far IMHO.

When I had a test drive at Bell & Colvill open day last summer I couldn't believe the rev-hang issue. It ruined the car and made gearchanges slow and cumbersome.

I wouldn't buy a car that was so poorly engineered (oops, I did buy an M3W...) If people keep buying the car with the existing issue I suppose it's a bit of a caveat emptor thingy.

But sounds like the car is transformed after the change, so based on my experience I would go for the change in a flash, and treat it as an aftermarket upgrade and you do get a bit more power too.

carrot ...well: i´ll (hopefully...) soon be able to add some experiences with both the ECU upgrade and the flywheel exchange (+ some more refinements...). shades

All depending on how quick the factory is building/finishing my car now...

... and how quick the capable people at Williams are in upgrading it! innocent

Well it was sitting just inside the trim shop this morning waiting for all that lovely leather thumbs

Met a lovely couple who know you, from Hamburg who are producing a book following the build of a car right through the process. They showed me their book of the LMC2012 with a lovely shot of me driving my 4/4. They are going to post me a signed copy of the book when they get back!

Sadly I won't be taking tours round until later this month. I was scheduled for tomorrow but my ankle was just too painful towards the end of my walk round the factory this morning. When you've got punters paying £15 per head, the last thing they need is some geriatric struggling taking them around! oldgit

With Heritage covering sprints and Hillclimbs it's less of a risk (well - it's a manged one).

I have thought about hill climbing the Roadster, which would reasonably affordable, but I would like circuit race but costs I think will be too high foe me.

why don't you just do the circuit rounds of sprinting - or there is a new Vintage & Classic Time Attack series which is a blend of both and in the standard classes you can compete with a Speed licence not a Race lincense which keeps thinks simple and cheap.

The Techniques Speed Championship looks interesting. I presume that my car will fall into Class 10d. I have been getting my Nat B upgrade form signed so all I need to do is send off to upgrade it for up to 4L.

I think that a roll bar will be a must do, and then I may need to think about front brake upgrade which looks as if allowed in 10d.

Maybe next year, I will look into it a bit more. Thanks

Roll-bar defo - don't worry about anything else. You only need a basic £24 Speed national b to take part.

I thought if it came under the MSA then you had to have the upgraded licence for over 2L?

Ok that makes sense, the blue book can be confusing, more confusing for us as the MR2 is still roadworthy but in Modified Production.

No that's the point, with the SpeedMog all I need is a roll bar I am off, and because the way it is set up with classes for each type of car it gives everyone a sporting chance. If you want to spend shed loads then you can but as you get quicker it will become harder to beat other classes, if you see what I mean. I could upgrade brakes in Class 10d but not so sure that will be needed on a sprint or hill climb, maybe or maybe not, I would have to see.

Well guys my car went to MMC for the ecu upgrade and stayed for a few days for 4 x adjustable shocks, new rear springs, and a panhard rod fitted and a couple of other jobs.

Its completely transformed the car. the rev hang has disappeared for normal spirited driving, the car rides, steers and brakes a lot better - to be honest the set up is ideal for making good progress !

I have fallen back in love with my "bumpy" Morgan !!!

(On the racing front - today on Motors TV you can see my offroad race car winning the Baja Hillrally at 15.45 with Dan Lofthouse driving and at 19.25 it wins a round 2 of the British Cross Country Championship with me driving.)

Been known as 'bumpy mike' for quite a few years in the off road world.

so that's why the car has a 'bu mpy' registration

Ok, so, just back, total distance 1208.9 miles, fuel used 190.49, average mpg 28.66. The best return was mostly motorway/A roads from Betws-Y-Coed to Holyhead and on to Belfast (34.5) worst 25.6 which was mostly B roads and taking a few friends out for "demos".

No dramas on route, and now beginning to trust her more and more....lovely.

I too have had the same issue of hanging revs on my Morgan 3.7 V6. Ten days ago the ECU was upgraded at Revolutions in Perth.

The Mog is a very different beast. No more hanging revs, responsive and predictable under acceleration, much easier to control coming into corners, changing down and driving through the corners. I cannot comment about the readings for fuel or speedo but will monitor the situation over the next weeks.

My first drive after the upgrade was St Fillans, Killin, Loch Tay, Crieff – no traffic, clear skies and 20+ degrees. Scottish motoring at is best. Back to France and the end of the month to do some serious mountain driving.

For anyone that is experiencing the hanging revs issue, I would definitely recommend the upgrade.

Oh good, should I be in the lucky position to order a new 3.7 Roadster then, what is the chance it will work properly straight out of the box, without having to spend and arm and a leg to get it to do what it should have done at the outset?

Can only confirm - even on a factory-new car you´d have to pay (& not only for the parts but for fitting via AR too... spend

I really do feel disappointed that Morgan see this as a profit making opportunity.

It is this sort of thing that upsets loyal customers, even if they increased the base price of the car to cover some of the development cost, it would sit better than charging around £2000 to make the car run properly.

You have to ask just what goes through the minds of the directors with this sort of caper and whatever happened to goodwill on both sides?

Hello,

I'm thinking about the next modification to my roadster.
Is anyone of the pioneers willing to comment on their long-term experience with the alternative ECU?
Problems with MOT?
Reliability?
Free access to further modify the parameters?
Power on a rolling road maybe?

coffee dear Beltempo -

besides "somebody" did assist MMC to source some desperately needed parts for the aftermarket AR ECU system they still haven´t delivered a single set to a customer other than the "prototype" (fitted to a TMers car!) & the sets fitted to their own race-prepped AR V6es doh crazy2 frown ... at least as far as i am in the knowing... innocent

So: patience is still needed...... but i happen to know the one that´ll (hopefully..) have one soon... oops

Well, one point of view is that since it came from Ford with the engine, as a package, it's without fault.......

And now there's an upgrade available which is better than standard. innocent thumbs

I too am of the strong opinion that it just cures a dangerous fault first line, but upgrades the car´s performance in many (more) ways. drive

I had been waiting for this problem to be sorted before ordering a Roadster.
A company offering ECU fixes or mechanical improvements as optional extras, doesn't convince me to take the Morgan route.
Looks like I may be heading off Howards Way.

Seriously I have a 3.7 - it must have had the ECU "upgrade" as it runs sooo well.

ECU upgrade is an option for new Roadsters £2400, or £4020 with the flywheel and timing chain it should of had.

Mine went straight through mot last Monday, emmisions had improved against the test done for me when I tested the ECU upgrade for the factory Jan to Mar 2015. I have had no issues and would recommend it.

Hello,
thanks for your comments. Since it is not really clear whether they are installing the kit already or only have it on the price-list, I will contact my dealer next weekend on his booth at the retro-classics show and report back.
Regarding the timing-chain, what is the “improvement†there? Tensioner?

thumbs they are offering "modified tensioners" via AR (which i orderd for my car to be fitted in production) besides several other further "upgrades" (as i.e. one-mass/lightened flywheel, dry sump, big brakes,...)

I emailed AR 3 times when I had my 3.7 asking if the tensioners could be modified as the engine sounded like a bag of spanners. I didn't receive a single reply. Really not impressed.

Noble, who use these engines in racing, strip out the VVT tech altogether and also modify tensioners.

Info received today at Williams re the ECU, thought I would share.....

MMC have recently removed the ECU upgrade from the option list for the Roadster due to problems sourcing electrical connectors. Working towards a solution but no time frame.
As a result have put my Roadster order on hold.

Thanks to Adrian for the education.....

Mike,

my ECU upgrade is on order since May, 2016 that is...
Electrical connectors, now that is a serious challenge.

I should consider cancelling my order.

Thanks for the information,

So, if these are not going to be made available, and, apparently have not been available for some time, can anyone explain why MR11MOG, who took delivery of his beautiful ARV6 Roadster in September, reported that he had the ECU upgrade fitted by the factory prior to delivery?
The mystery and fog surrounding this issue seems to continue!

I was informed that my car would be fitted with the ECU up grade as I didn't want it with out due to the rev hang.
Now how I can be sure that it has been done I dont Know.
What I can say is that it has no rev hang and drives perfectly.
It is a tremendous car, very fast and oodles of torque.
How they fitted it if there are no connectors I have no idea.

Basically you need to accelerate hard in 3rd gear from around 200rpm and hit about 4500-5000rpm and then go to select 4th quickly, you should notice that the revs will not drop back and may even increase slightly, and the car will continue to accelerate in 4th for a few seconds. Be warned extreme speeds can be reached quickly.

Another trait is the on a dual carriageway who cruising at around 70mph in 5th or 6th try lifting off the accelerator you should find that reeves do not drop for several seconds.

The original ECU is largish a triangular shaped black and sliver box that is in the fuse box under the bonnet, I thing the MBE is smaller and a different shape.

Just checked my car. Registered June 13

The ECU control box (within the fuse box) is rectangular - and all silver.

I was told that Williams had replaced it from the original.

My car does not have rev hang.

Hope this helps!

What I can say is that it has no rev hang and drives perfectly.
It is a tremendous car, very fast and oodles of torque.
How they fitted it if there are no connectors I have no idea.
If you have no rev hang why are you bothered which ecu the car has?

The ECU would be a a box that is sealed, or semi sealed, and on one side there would be a socket that has a row of many pins into which a plug from the wiring loom connects. The wires that connect to that plug carry the inputs from the various sensors and the outputs to the fuel injectors, instruments (via the MFU - Multi Function Unit), etc.

Below is a photo that Peter J published in TM of his Roadster ECU box.

"The actual ECU is underneath the black box, which is the interface betwen the Ford Engine and the Smiths Instruments."

Always puzzles me that Morgan manages to make the customer pay for problems that should not exist when it comes to design issues or components that don't perform as they should.

Just jumped onto this thread from a recent one I started on this subject. I don't seem to suffer (that I've noticed) from rev hang when easing off in gear or down shifting (when it may be an advantage), but up shifting I definatly get a lumpy change unless I wait for revs to drop.

Being a very new owner I was assuming it was an engine trait I would need to learn to live with, but after a technician at Krazy Horse my local dealer pointed out this was an established issue, I'm encouraged to have it sorted.

IF an ECU upgrade can be had, and as the OP of this thread suggests without emission or economy issues, then I want it. Will begrudgingly accept the extra 20 bhp if its necessary innocent

FWIW this is image inside my fuse box. Central box is switch control board - ECU is underneath, so nothing to be seen.

In any case will be contacting my dealer.

ETA: Forgot to add the up change issue I have is very noticeable on the generally very light throttle I have been on an engine having covered only a few hundred miles, and at modest revs say around 3000 rpm. Concerned now having read a little more of this long thread, there may be worse to come scared

Surely Ford who make the engine will have a fix for this...or is it something to do with this engine is modified to install into a Morgan?

Accepted view seems to be the ECU settings favour the more common auto transmission in the engines original application.

Fords's involvment has been discussed earlier in this thread

I'm led to believe that Adrian's trials with the ECU upgrade work is now standard on modern Roadsters. They were a LOT worse back then..!!!!

Dual mass flywheels are a relatively recent introduction - the cars I worked on in the 70/90 period never had one and werent any more difficult to drive.

Encouraging Steve, many thanks.

TBH a 140 mile drive today to the Midlands on A roads with the top down was a pleasure as I wasn't dwelling on the negatives. Nevertheless will have a word with KH next week when car booked for first service.

Follow up from above. According to Dan at KH, Adrian's efforts led to the ARV6 mapping but did not filter down to Roadster production due to lack of emission compliance. This is born out in the fact that the admittedly useless fuel consumption bar graph display still works.

Very interesting info here. Someone presumably has had some input into retuning the variables, but I have no idea which outfit, or how deep they went.

I have high hopes for Dan coming up with a far better product for the future, Richard.

Thank you for the update.

Oh, I don't know.. I've spent many an unhappy hour attempting to tune a pair of carbs in, let alone a set of triple SU's..!

Plugging a laptop in is easy in comparison, except for the fact I have no idea what I'm doing..

Triple SU's on Healeys were dropped in favour of a pair. They proved tricky to balance and were I'm told only fitted to allow the rally spec to run 3 Webers. Mine were fiddly to get right but have stayed in tune very well.

Hello,

next week I will get my 3.7. The Morgan was built in June last year. What should I expect? Rev hang or not???

Rev hang sadly as they stopped the ECU upgrade & no longer provide it. But some cars have horrible rev hang & others don't.

Welcome to TM Jan, from another 3.7 owner

Some seem to suffer more than others, I don't think the factory offer the ECU upgrade anymore, some say the Dual Mass flywheel contributes to rev-hang & some 3.7's can have that or the solid Aero Racing version

I'm sure you are an accomplished driver, but with damp roads I would be cautious & change up the gears early, as the upper rev range contributes to rev-hang too

I think it is a bit odd that MMC have stopped the upgrade completely. Do dealers have the option to continue offering it?
I suppose as the car is no longer an option they would slim down trad options but surely letting dealers pick it up would be a good idea?

My understanding is that it was not a re-flash, but a completely different ECU branded as Aero Racing and they only had a few

The std ECU can't be 'cracked' partly because when the car is first switched on MMC don't input the chassis nr into the ECU data and it can't then be read or flashed, apart from basic fault codes

There are a couple of reputable Mog specialists who have been trying to sort this...and after some years still we wait, so it can't be easy to crack

Later ones seem better to me. But with or without the ECU upgrade the gearbox likes to be used slowly.

Given the number of these engines made and sold in the USA surely there are specialists there that may have already developed programmable ECUs for the 3.7L Cyclone engine!

I found this one in the UK...

https://www.oc-motorsport.co.uk/pro...-cyclone-e6-2016-evo-chips-stage-1-remap

Yes, it is a Transit engine... it seems. If so the very, very low 1st gear makes sense....

Peter,
not so simple as I understand it. MMC piggy backs their ECU onto the Ford one & then lock them. Without the MMC code you can do nothing.

So what does the MMC ECU actually do? Probably only drives the dash display.

Would it be possible to replace the Ford and MMC ECUs with a new unit?

I would also recommend googling the US Mustang V6 scene before making a decision. It is often reported that a tune was ok to good, but the rev hang issue was still present, if maybe a bit less. First I would test drive the car as is. Some roadster owners report that their car has no problems with rev hang, but who knows how little sporty driving these people do.
What I would personally avoid: an expensive work around. For example, I would not change the flywheel because it is just fiddling with symptoms.

https://www.mustang6g.com/forums/threads/best-tune-to-get-rid-of-rev-hang.25309/

Here above is just one example of a discussion, reading the 5 pages I would recommend just to show that it is not that simple!
It's not that you can select any tuning and think everything is ok now. The thread is 6 years old. Maybe by now there is much more experience on the subject.

Yes ouch. I have no idea why having fixed the issue they didn't make it standard. I understood the flywheel change on your car helps.

John, two things about that, as I just wrote, I would not doctor on symptoms. The flywheel has nothing to do with it causally. You can do that when everything else is finally ok.
Mustang drivers with manual transmission and V6 have the same problems as seen in the example thread. There are many threads like this. It is an exhaust and residual fuel combustion problem. The engine is programmed that way. Apparently, the only way to get ahead is to use very drastic methods, with MMC replacing the entire engine control system as seen on your invoice.

What does Lambda sensors 4.8 mean on the invoice? Have bank 1 (upstream cat) left and right been replaced with wideband sensors?

MMC very likely did not make it standard because the emissions no longer meet the certification. Then, strictly speaking, the car is no longer TÜV/MOT capable. A manufacturer cannot afford that. But the dealers should be allowed to do it with the blessing of MMC.

As far as I'm concerned ECUs are the Devil's work 🙂

What I find surprising is that, if the issue is present on the car the motor was in originally, from one of the world's biggest motor companies .... and rev-hang to me suggests at least some safety/driveability concern .... how come, post Nader and Pinto, FoMoCo didn't definitively sort it? And we can piggy-back on that solution?

Tho I'm the first to admit my choice of a crossflow was dictated by my desire for a car without computers so am only peripherally knowledgeable about such things.

Bosch make different specs of Lambda Oxygen sensors. I've heard of 4.2 and 4.9. They are wideband sensors, normally only about £100 each.

Don't know if 4.8 is another spec.

I also notice a Lambda "conversation" at 35 quid. That'll teach you not to talk to technicians when they're hard at work.

Good luck with your new purchase, I hope that you are lucky and do not have an issue.

I purchased my 3.7 Roadster last summer and was really concerned that this would be an issue. I really cannot spot the problem, I've even tried pushing harder than normal in safe conditions to see if the revs hold on gear change, and they don't.

Although your thoughts make sense Peter, the gearbox ratio's used on our Roadsters are the 3.7V6 Mustang ones shared with the 2.3 turbo variant. The same gearbox casing takes the higher 5.0V8 gear cluster though (although 5th is still 1:1) and a swap I've considered.

[pedant]There isn't an ECU per se on our Roadsters, its a PCM which works to the benefit of the full drivetrain. There is however a BCU controlling all non engine specific aspects of the electrics/electronics and heavily integrated with the former.[/pedant]

The original reason MMC gave for lack of availablilty of their "ECU" upgrade was lack of suitable connectors, although the cost was horrendous. It was speculated it may have been for (lack of) emission compliance though given the suggestion it shares the same mapping with the ARV6 track variant.

If you scroll back through the post it is clearly stated the upgrade gives the same or lower emissions than the standard set up and similar mpg.

It is also stated to deliver over 300 bhp which is what the dealer told me. I have never had it tested though

A dealer explained the ECU has to be send to MMC. Aero Racing would do some changes. The warranty will stop and he is not sure that this feature is still available.

Someone else on here asked the factory recently and they said it wasn't available.

Hi Jan and welcome to the madhouse!

I have a 3.7 roadster purchased new in 2019. Like StevieMac I have not experienced this Rev hang issue or if it is there I have not noticed it. What is funny is that in my youth I used to take part in rallies and one of the most common modifications and seen as a great benefit was to set the tick over at about 2500 revs. This created the “rev hang†that everybody on here moans about. The other thing I find strange about the roadster is the number of people who moan about the gearbox. Yes, first gear is very low, but great for hill starts, but apart from that I would say one of the nicest boxes around. My previous two Morgan’s had the Mazda gearbox which everybody raves about but give me the roadster one any day.

DONT worry about it drive it and you will love it.

Hi Sir P,

motivating and interesting words. Thanks for that.
During the last 34 years I drove dozens of different cars. Always it was helpful to feel the groove and to find the individual way each car wants to be driven. I'm sure you know what I mean. And I suppose there is a special way a Roadster 3.7 wants to be driven. If you are willing to adapt you can be lucky. So I'm sure (I hope ;-)) - I can love it in the Morgan special way.

What I noticed is an exact gear lever. Thats fine. For my opinion it could be shorter. You say the 1st is very low. What about starting in 2nd? That shouldn't be a problem with 1000kg and 290 HP.

Jan

I normally start off in second.

"What I noticed is an exact gear lever" Could not have said it better.

You are quite right about startng in second, 9 times out of 10 this is the case. It is really 2 cars in one. If you want to have some fun press the throttle and it just goes and goes and goes. I took it up Mont Ventoux in France and it was electric. It suprised the locals and also me how fast it went up the steep gradients and when you really open her up the noise is fantastic. Then, the opposite, you sit on a motorway at 70mph in 6th gear and it just purrs like a Rolls Royce. Very nice car I am sure you will enjoy it.

Jan - the standard gearlever can be shortened quite a bit - and there is always the choice of short-/quickshift conversions innocent

And: always (!) start in 2nd gear ( thinking ok: may be not standing on a steep hill... a VERY! steep hill in that)

It doesn´t matter how fast it becomes, but how it becomes fast. laugh2

Sir P and numog,

you make my heart beat. 6 more days waiting... You both describe exactly what I was looking for. A REAL machine. Always sovereign. Able to cruise and to race. never vulgar. Perfect.

A friend of my parents always drove a Morgan Plus 8. When I was a real youngster I had the chance to accompany him. It was a formative experience.

Mont Ventoux - I did it several years ago. With an Audi A4...

Perhaps the 4.8 reference means they are the same as fitted to the later Aero's with the BMW 4.8ltr ?

I went out yesterday to shop for the MIL so I tried gear changes between 5,000 to 6,000 rpm on the A14. My car has no rev hang so the fix works.

My long term mpg is as per this thread & inline with the handbook.

I don't normally drive at those revs but the shift was slick and clean, if anything better than at say 3 to 4k .

I just realised I have never hit the rev limiter in the 3.7 whereas on the S1 I did occasionally. Will have to try harder.

"Loonatic"..........although to be honest I drive my Roadster (where permitted) in the upper rev ranges and maybe that's helping to keep the little light off.

That was what I thought Dave. Keep the ECU lights off & also get a grin. I tell you what in 3rd & 4th at those revs it is fast.

Looking into the viability of fitting this short shift. Linked image.

Richard, we should look for a bulk deal. Libra Motive (remember them) fitted a Librands short shift to my zetec 4/4. What a change.

Definitely Graham even if hauling weight. But as I remember after your trip up in my S1 & the Adrian's 3.7 you pointed out the extra torque won.
I must get there again for a blast & you would be welcome to join.
