I have family living 180 miles away with no possible recharging facilities so in a emergency I would need a 360 mile range.
I think in your position I'd be looking at a PHEV like a BMW 530e iPerformance with 29 miles of electric-only range (plenty for most short day trips and a 5-hour recharge off a home supply) but with a full 2.0 petrol engine for long distance work.
My mate at work has been running the 330e for almost three years now and loves it, he's lucky in that he gets his daily commute done on the leccy range (just) and recharges each night
