If these demonstrators want to obliterate our history they must expect a backlash from a number of quarters. Now we have the National Trust saying that they will high light all unsavory history on all displayed at their properties.
I think that we should raise Bath to the ground, since the Roman's used slaves, ostracise all Arabs who's ancestors took slaves from the east coast of Africa, cut relations with all central Asian republics whose Khans dealt widely in slaves.
Slavery is abhorrent but not new and was carried out in times far different to the present.
Nobody (apart maybe from the Daily Mail and associated readers) have talked about obliterating history. A statue, that 99.9% of population did not know existed, of a man who 99.9% of the population had no knowledge of, was removed and chucked in the harbour. It later transpires that he was a key figure in the slave trade, and made a fortune from the misery of others, and there had been several campaigns previously to have it removed.
The 'history' wll remain, It will be in 100,000's of books worldwide, and now on several million web pages. No one is obliterating it. Just removing a statue of someone which is now considered to be in bad taste. Same reason that, despite raising millions, you won't see any reference to Jimmy Savile at Stoke Mandeville. No one is denying his existance, just accepting that it's not in the best interest to celebrate him.
