The Bristol statue looks to me like a protracted problem in Bristol that has been kicked into touch by the Bristol leaders. It is an example of my earlier point about those in power not acting on something that then festers and worsens. If it had been tackled years ago then perhaps the duality of the slavery versus benefactor nature could have been portrayed as such and not just praising him for being a benefactor whilst apparently hiding/glossing over the slave trade. Bristol was a major sea port back then when life was different. It’s growth and prestige was partly built on dubious activity, like many other places. History should not ignore or hide such things but keep them alive as a reminder for now and the future.
Just think, too, of other institutions that have a chequered past.

One thing that annoys me in this current situation is the way that “they” , whoever they are, are deciding who is to be targeted and put on target lists for protesters to attack.
