I think I understand your rational re the dampers Heinz.

I used some of that magic tape suggested by Bernt to keep the water out of my damaged cable. Its holding up very well.

in my workshop I use this "rubber splicing tape" (offered by many comanies) very often. You can wrap it around tubes, cables, wires and so on!
