The packing with graphite grease offers a very short window before the clonking returns. I took my rear wheels off a week ago last Thursday and repacked both. Both substantially retightened. I drove approximately 300 miles before the clonking returned.
One comment I would make is that the return of the dreaded clonk is noticeably accelerated by hot weather. In other words, the grease is thinning due to temperature. If. Graphite based grease is used, per MMC customer services then it needs to be one capable of operating under high temperature. Having just returned from France and driven circa 700 miles since the last grease application I am faced yet gain with having to repeat regreasing, which is frankly utterly ridiculous. In the past when I challenged MMC CS about this they told me, and I quote, ‘It’s a feature of wire wheels’! No, it’s a feature of a poorly engineered and manufactured splining system.
Quite honestly, I now think the only solution is to convert to bolted wheels, with the substantial expense that involves. A terrible indictment of yet another poor andlow quality offering from MMC.
