Years ago with the cars of that era every Sunday was a quick check time. Fluids etc mainly. Once a month a bit more for extra checks. By making sure the basics were all good there were few problems. When changing the car then the battery, ignition system, carbs, brakes etc were all given a once over.
People I know who have classics fall into two camps. Those who fettle, maintain and keep in good order.
Those who drive, break down, whinge, keep having easily sorted issues.
Time and effort to sort out then simple routine checks make most classics decent cars unless you buy a poor example to start with.
If you want a car to just jump in and forget about until MOT/service time then get a modern tintop.
I bought swmbo a Metro as a work car/runabout ( district nurse). Time was spent keeping it reliable. When lease cars were an option she got one. New car at 3 years, all costs covered, breakdown/ replacement available. Cheap as only private use paid for. A no- brainer .
