I hope that all of you who decry cash, even for small amounts, don't loose your cards one day and some tyke don't swipe away. You could them after wait for days for a new card. I use cheques just to be bloody awkward and keep up demand for them.
I agree with you about cash John. I know that governments the world over are keen to eventually do away with it to make life harder for those involved in the black and grey markets, but there are many legitimate reasons to favour cash.
Having been as poor as a church mouse at an early stage of my career, I find cash in my wallet to be a comforting thing. A couple of stressful experiences of a card not working for one reason or another, despite knowing that my account is in funds, means I always want some of the folding stuff about my person.
There is something about the anonymity of cash that I like too; whenever you use a card you are leaving a trace, and a bit of information about yourself, which IMHO may not be any business of the market analysts who study these things. It does my head in that it seems you can't buy anything these days without it affecting the pop up ads on your computer and so on.
On the flip side, I'm fairly astonished by people who come into my pub without even a Euro or two in cash about their person, and want to pay for, say a packet of crisps or a coffee with their Visa card. I let them do so as I no longer have to pay a minimum transaction fee; it's a straight percentage these days. I'd rather take their money than turn them away.
