I'm fairly astonished by people who come into my pub without even a Euro or two in cash about their person, and want to pay for, say a packet of crisps or a coffee with their Visa card.
The convention in the pub where I drink is that if you want to pay using a card, then you round the bill up to the hearest £10 and take the change in cash. That way Rodda (the landlord) has less cash in his till to have to bank if you don't drink any more, and if you do, you've got the cash ready to pay for it.
