Interesting comments re China (HB above). Don’t forget that:
1) China has only recently had wide scale car ownership (less than 20 years) - they don’t have the emotional attachment to the IC engine that we have.
2) The geography in China is such that people either stay in their own urban conurbation or use air/rail for the very long journeys between cities.
3) If you don’t live in a city in China then you are extremely unlikely to afford a car of any kind.
