I recognise we have to change we cannot go on as we are. I'm not certain whether this is necessarily the right answer and the only answer. Its an answer but not the only answer and we seem to be committing hundred of £billions to this path and may find it is not the correct one at some point in the future.

I'm not quite so sure that they are necessarily the 'eco' answer to private transport they are held out to be. Issues do still arise as to the eventual economic. environmental and recycling cost from eg sourcing materials for batteries to their eventual disposal. Currently electricity is far from being environmentally green, the massive infrastructure cost we have to incur and build to service 'eco' energy infrastructure from wind turbines, charging stations etc. From my school boy studies I seem to recollect that the energy costs of building a coal power station ( including transport, concrete, steel production etc) used to consume the equivalent of the first 20 or so years of the power stations electricity generation......

Painting a wider picture, there are real concerns as to eg whether reliance on interconnectors between the UK and continental Europe (we are building more of them) will not give us energy independence and will lead to political instability, 'bully boy' tactics as being displayed by France threatening to cut off power supply to Jersey to enforce their view and position on French fishing rights are a very poignant pointer to what maybe to come. Come 2026 when the EU:UK fishing rights are up for negotiation, the French will follow the same path as with Jersey and the more reliance we build on sharing the energy the greater the risk of economic retaliation is highly likely.

So if we had sufficient electricity generation capacity within the UK resources, I would be less concerned but we don't and increasingly it seems we may become more and more dependant upon outside energy generation which comes with considerable risks. Very much in the same way the EU's growing dependence on piped Russian gas (another fossil fuel) will carry considerable risk as the Ukraine has found out to its cost. I don't think enough resources are being donated to cleaner syndetic fuels which can use the current ICE resources we have to hand requiring potentially far less infrastructure change and investment to support.

I have nothing against EV, I'm just not certain that they are the panacea and replacing one current issue and creating a future massive problem for ourselves....a kind of delaying the inevitable. One really has to question what we are doing going forward, I understand from articles I have read that Bitcoin mining may now be consuming 40% of the world's electricity production.
