Yes Richard, it is rather confusing and not helped by the fact that the M3W is then licensed as a car rather than a tricycle. I think this is because it exceeds the 450Kg weight limit for a tricycle, but there is no weight limit for the MSVA type approval so it would seem that still applies. I've looked into this because I am building a 3 wheeler and this will eventually need MSVA approval. It seems quite standard practice amongst the kit builders to submit the vehicle for approval in a state that will pass and then apply later modifications to make it driveable. A particular problem if it is fitted with windscreens is that it must also include wipers, washers and a de-mister. MSVA is, however, a much less stringent examination than IVA, and includes only rudimentary emissions requirements and no ABS or limits on internal sharp surfaces atc.
