Many of the same issues apply for petrol cars. You have a tank of XX litres. You have an engine and right foot. Even with petrol your range varies just like leccy.

Heavy right foot ?
Passengers on board ?
Incorrect tyre pressures ?
Air/Con on or off ?

It's not as if the petrol car is always going to hit it's expected range either. I think the question is more about the gap between the testing methodology and real life.

With petrol you just have less fear of range anxiety due to the speed and availability of refueling. The same variability still applies.

The issue around total number of recharges and diminishing capacity is unique to the electric as well the disposal and haz-chem challenges which are not being addressed yet.
