Update 33 - First fit of the front wings.

This weekend saw the fist fit of the front wings.. in the last update we left the sprint car with the inner bay panels fitted as a rolling body.

Now it's time for the new front wings to be trimmed and fitted.. it is one of those measure, measure, measure...... measure.............measure.................cut type of jobs..

A perfect fit has no room for error and you may have noticed we like things to be "right".

So templates, tape measures, squares at the ready... we started on the O/S wing making a template and marking out a trim-line.

Finally after a lot of drawing, measuring, holding it up and comparing.... finally we're ready to make first cut. For this we decided to use an air saw rather than the rotary cutter we used last time. The air saw we have found provides an ideal combination of longer distance straight cutting and short curves in a way an electric jigsaw or rotary cutter allows. Using a metal cutting blade also allows a fine cut. The air saw cutting speed also seems to be slow-enough not to "gum up" the blade.

yes - we are using fibreglass wings - before anyone shouts heresy - many cant tell without touching and tbh... rubbing is racing and wings are the on the front line of the action.

We only trim upto the end of the bulkhead as we will trace the inner bay panel shape on the inside of the wing to get the cut line perfect.

The first fit shows that the template and measurements were just where we wanted them. The fit is tight and accurate all the way along the body-line.

Now onto the N/S, as you need to get both on before final trim to get them aligned at the front end otherwise you have little room for adjustments if they don't both line up perfectly... which given the hand made nature of the Morgan front end - is "rarely".

You can see that on first fit the inner lower edges of the wings are not on the same plane a variety of adjustments to the inner wing brackets and the bay panels is required to get them into the perfect position... we're only talking a few mm but it's obvious when you see it.

Following small adjustments we get them aligned.

The gap lines on both sides are tight and the wing visuals on both sides looks uniform and symmetric (although they are actually not quite - this is normal before anyone asks).

View from the gallery (sorry it's slightly blurred)....

From underneath... it's one super shiny car....

We have also found that the cowl on this car is not the usual type and it was built with a low line cowl so.. once the wings have had a final trim we will take the car to get a new ali cowl and scooped bonnet made.

Jays also came up trumps for us... the intake trumpets we were shipped were the 40mm ones rather than 90mm.... not very handy.. so Jays kindly popped his spares in the post and we've used them as a guide. I'm pretty sure the 30mm back plate and the 100mm filter will work out for us. We're going to take a look at that in the week once we get the wings bolted on.

On a couple of other interesting notes:

Build slot
There is an ideal donor car available if someone is interested in a car similar to either the Yellow or Blue/White car we've shown on here... obviously they don't just have to be out and out racers... we work with trim shops to have any combination you like.. also the fully digital dash can be replaced with the original/aviation style units.

Another interesting project
Also amongst the multitude of Morgans coming through the workshop right now, one particular Aero owner has begun initial discussions on a S1 engine swap to the S62 V8 fom the M5. We'll be working through a detailed feasibility study in the next few weeks but my research to-date shows this is a viable route.

So.....That's all for now folks... hope to get more to you all soon and certainly whilst the blue and white car is off for bonnets, paint and exhaust.. there is the yellow car to finish off!!
