The car was running great and I was in tune with her, nipping up and down the gears sweeping round the bends with hardly any other cars around. Then it was a quick dash up the A303 for 30 miles, and off at Mere and back onto to some more interesting roads to Salisbury at 7:25, then onto the old A30 to the back of Winchester via Stockbridge, a great road but need to be wary of traffic from side roads. Then the roads through the Worthy's, a great twisty A road, sadly restricted heavily nowadays, not so in my youth! Then up the A31 through Four Marks(where I lived as a child) to Alton to turn up at my best friends at 8:45 unannounced to wake him up with the Aero boom, 127 miles in 2 hours 40 mins, an average of 47mph, not bad consider only 30 on dual carriageway and the rest on old A roads ignored by most nowadays. drive laugh I retraced the same route home after the Classic car meet near Farnham, leaving Alton at 15:00, stopping 10mins for Fuel, a 5 min drink/refresh stop arriving home in Seaton at 17:45, lovely drive, only one T**t all the way, in a new BMW M something being aggressive behind me on the A303, after I let him past after several miles he continued to push every other car out the way, an accident waiting to happen I'd say. ooo Didn't spoil my day though, just joy

I flex my Commute back from work on Fridays rather than join the Static A303 at Hawk House or join the tail of the traffic at Podimore - it's actually quicker for me to go via the A37 into Yeovil skirt around the top of it and join the A30 at Penn Mill and head on in a relaxed manner along the A30 - longer distance yes slower roads yes but it is moving.

From your description Adrian I guess you pulled off the A303 after Mere at Willoughby Hedge services and took the B3089 to Barford St Martin? Having travelled for 11 + years from Gill' to Wallop one got to find some nice alternate routes, did you take in Camp Hill north of Salisbury then go via Ford to join the A30 or go on through Salisbury itself. Weirdly enough I actually miss my run arounds on that route on busy days, another one was going south of Salisbury via the Race Course and driving south of the A30 via Broad Chalk and Ebbesbourne Wake before rejoining the A30 at Berwick St John, even on bank holiday weekend Fridays that route could be devoid of traffic whilst all the main routes were ground to a halt, much prettier journey to on a sunny day.

As for the powerful saloons driven in an aggressive style all to common unfortunately.
