I can't help but contrast the content of this thread with a letter I received today from Mercedes Benz UK.
My daily drive is now subject to a formal safety recall, "monitored by DVSA (Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency) in line with the Code of Practice on Safety Defects in the UK".
The recall has been established as the bonding of a small piece of trim under the rear window may be faulty which could result in this section of trim being detached when driving the car.
MJF, you raise a very interesting point.
A recall for a defective piece of trim under the rear window would indicate the more weighty issues surrounding chassis/wishbone/peddle box would attract similar attention as a minimum.
Vehicle recalls can be voluntary, made by the manufacturer but are usually a result of customer notification of an issue to the authorities.
The DVSA will not know unless they are informed.
The following link is instructive particularly in relation to Re calls and “Non-Coded Actions”
