Richard, such is my habit of taking to roughly surfaced roads on occasion that I do have to admit to my old Mogs sump bearing the occasional scar despite it`s old fashioned "stance" in comparison with the more stylish drag ar*e look that seems to have been in style for quite some time.
I well remember when offered to drive the then new 993 at it`s launch, looking at what seemed like very small sidewall profile tyres compared to my old 911 and thinking this is going to be a rough ride... to then be most surprised in that it was anything but, and with increased directional stability when cornering reasonably hard... Seems Porsche had as Porsche engineers tend to do, redesigned the whole suspension system to suit what seemed like very low profile tyres at the time....
I suspect the MMC required to as ever go with the flow all be it a few years behind in terms of lowering the "stance" to more suit the modern motoring trends, and by the time they may have adopted lower profile tyres a complete suspension re-design was likely to be required if not desired, thus the CX seemed to be the next logical phase in the design... Best to just look upon it as natural evolutionary processes..? (-:
BTW my 991 sits on 245/35`s on 20" wheels (front) and 305/30/R20 rear thus even lower profile than the 993 i drove all those years back...! Even Luddites have to accept some degree of "progress" all be it reluctantly so... (-:

I was an avid reader of Motor Sport when we had proper top grade racing instead of the flying laptop prima dona era for which I have zero interest.
I digress, the Jenks wrote very wisely when reviewing cars handling critically and he would often refer to the Bavarian Motor Werks making up for their poos suspension gemetry by putting stupid sized wheels and tyres to compensate for their inadequacies.

This rings very true for me especially when I throw my Sport around on her 80 section skinny tyres. the Plus 8 on the Lightweight MMC alloys at 16" x 7" has the same effect of not letting go on her 55 sections.

I have to say that Lough Neagh being the most significant lake in Britain and Ireland by a country mile is deserving of a name all it's own at 19 x 9 miles,

The Germans are all a See which gets a little confusing for Brits..
