I hope this was all a misunderstanding but there are enough similar cases to have to conclude that MMC is doing all it can to reduce expenditure on after sales issues which may be necessary to post a profit but is doing their customer base no favours at all.

I really hope they have some plonker of a consultant remind them that most of their customers are long term and getting new customers is not easy for them...
