So far in Italy the death rate is 2.6% if the figures are to be believed. Almost all, if not all, were people suffering from some severe health problems. On the bright side 45 out of 650 cases have now been declared cured and have been dismissed from hospital or quarantine.

I suspect we have so many reported cases only because we are doing a lot of checking. If it was not for all the publicity most people would only think they had a bad flu and treat it at home.

Other than the 2 Chinese (now dismissed) at the end of January in Rome the major outbreak was only 2 weeks ago so I think it is fair to say that reasonably young and fit people tend to get over the infection in about 2 weeks and severe cases, or elderly people, may take as much as 4 weeks before they can be considered cured.

It is certainly not something to be taken lightly but it is not the end of the world either.

My niece, who is at university in England at the moment, just flew from Genoa to London and was astonished that there was not the slightest health check at the airport when she cleared immigration.
