It must have crossed their mind that there’s a potential for huge government savings in not having to pay out their pensions any more!

There’s quite a bit of opposition to the governments approach from other medical scientists who question if the “herd” approach will actually result in meaningful immunity. On top of that the latest quotes seem to be that out of the 80% infection rate that they are looking for, about 8 million will require hospital treatment. Well that’s going to swamp the NHS...which I understood was exactly what this approach was meant to avoid!
I’m convinced that is all about money and in particular GDP in the year of Brexit.

The response of an Italian scientist to the proposal of "herd" immunity was that either the advice to the UK Government was bad or misunderstood. Given that the worse effected are predominantly elderly or otherwise weak people this means being prepared to watch thousands of people die. In his opinion this approach is both irresponsible and cynical.

The other interesting thing that he mentioned was that it is now obvious that 20% of those infected do not develop severe symptoms, in other words they are healthy carriers of the virus.

It seems that many people, businesses and organisers of events in the UK are being more responsible than the government. Unfortunately there are also many people who are not prepared to alter their habits.


But Peter, unless you quarantine the whole world until you are 100% certain that no more cases exist then you run the risk that all those who have been locked away to avoid the virus will not have built up any immunity and will therefore be vulnerable again to any hitherto undetected "healthy" carriers and the whole thing starts up again.

This virus has to take it's course and the hope is that the UK can elongate the time span so that the health service will have a better chance of treating those who are vulnerable and do get very ill and thus reduce the mortality rate.

I guess it's just a case of whether we chose to believe the Italian Scientists or the British Scientists.

These are uncharted waters and we will just have to see who gets it right.

As a slight aside, sometimes it is a good idea to adopt different strategies to solve a problem. When you see which one worked best, you can use that accumulated knowledge next time.
