I understand your concerns Peter but I used to use e.g. a plastic spatula (or a 12" plastic ruler ) to slide between and separate the Velcro quite easily.

Admittedly this was on perspex plates so the ally ones may not be as robust - perhaps you could put an additional alloy sheet on the back....?

P.S. Aligning the cross head screws settles my OCD....... innocent
