good old galvin..... zinc being the sacrificial lamb for ferrous products....
In February of 2015 we moved from Northern Virginia back to Oklahoma in the midst of a wicked snowstorm. We had two motorcycles on an open trailer and they were incased in salty, grimey road ice..... yuck
A friend of mine had a BMW R70 that he bought used from someone that lived on Cape Cod. The salty air did a number on the motor and the aluminum fins looked like they'd been blasted and pitted! Between the corrosion where bimetal joins are present as well as having a solid aluminum motor out front where it catches everything, there are many reasons to avoid this crud and just wait for good weather to come. My Blau Beastie is locked in a box for six months and, as frustrating as it is, I wait it out. The damage is just not worth it.
What's your mileage? Who cares. Is it practical? See #1. What happens when it rains? You get wet.
