£8.40 per day is the statutory amount for a complete loss of service. For those providers that have signed up for the automatic compensation scheme you shouldn't even have to ask for it OFCOM: Automatic compensation

My landline was down for over 8 weeks earlier this year, Virgin Media currently owes me £436.80.
