"They" ia a plural pronoun, my understanding of English Grammar is that "it" would be correct when referring to an indvidual of non-binary gender, but I'm an old luddite and must be missing something.

It has been commonly employed in everyday English ever since and has gained currency in official contexts. Singular they has been criticised since the mid-18th century by prescriptive commentators who consider it an error.


I’ve always known “they” as singular as well as plural….. e.g. “I met someone the other day - they seemed quite friendly”.
