A regularly struck bridge on the edge of Nottingham has a warning sign triggered by a vehicle height detector (as well as lots of fixed signs). There are turning places on front of thee bridge in both directions. In spite of all this, it still gets hit. In recent years, a low loader carrying a large excavator hit the bridge. The resulting chaos led the excavator to collide with a car travelling in the opposite direction with fatal consequences.

Perhaps a spike in the centre of the steering wheel triggered by a low bridge warning might work.
