Chris, on re-reading this I think your problem is the battery not the alternator. If the charge light goes out then the alternator should be generating a current. So it sounds as if the battery is discharging and either it's faulty (most likely) or there is a leakage in the car's system. Any decent garage should have a battery tester which will quickly determine if it's the battery.
