I also think a lot has to do with your 'nurture' during those formative growing up years, did you come from a 'mend and make do background' or more of a consumerism environment. Add into that the glossy motor magazines that often over sold the virtues and qualities of a specific car (you couldn't afford at the time) especially the pin up poster variety eg Lambo/Porsche Turbo/Ferrari exotica that never live upto the dream and pedestal you put them on, when you eventually can afford to acquire one.

In fairness, I for quite a while was doing nearly 100k miles a year, commuting 300 mile a day back and forth to the office, besides all the additional business miles and then my own pleasure miles at weekends, which kind of consumed cars at a very rapid rate. Add into that I sadly in my youth loved my BL crap, I had 5 MG Midgets, 3 TR7's most from new and they fell apart in no time at all and totally unreliable and with the mileages I was doing I needed total reliability. The wife had a Mini and an MG Metro Turbo and they disintegrated in front of your eyes, weld seams and poor paintwork hate salty sea air. I learnt to ignore the Buy British when it came to cars.

In my experience the most reliable brand has been Mercedes, as I mentioned earlier if they still made the 124 today I would have a 124 Mercedes Cabriolet, but now the youngest getting on for over 25 years old now, they tend to suffer biodegradable wiring harness failure and spares are getting harder to track down and disproportionately expensive due to Mercedes spares pricing inflation policy. I had a very low mileage immaculate Sportline version in storage for special trips and holidays had it not been stolen and exported abroad never to be seen again, I would still have it today.
Whilst I may have indulged myself a little in the past, and consumed cars due to high mileages covered, I tend to behave myself these days. A friend has had to built 2 extra garages at his home to house his now 20 plus car collection ranging from Bentleys to 70's American muscle cars plus his collection of Harleys........but he like many others he uses the UK tax system to his advantage, I've never been quite so calculating, there sometimes can be more than destination addiction at play in any given set of circumstances.
