Just been crunching some numbers on the EV option, and while I can be very creative on the man maths when it comes to open top sports cars, for the tin top a sensible financial head must prevail. So, while I was prepared to go electric for the next family car, I am struggling to justify it when it comes to making sense of the numbers EV v PHEV v ICE.

Decided on the BMW so not interested in alternative models, but what is interesting in the X1 is that the cars seem to be almost identical, including options, apart from the power train, allowing transparent price comparison.

So, just been on the configurator and with M spec + leather + premium sound + metallic paint + sunroof + tech package, I get the following OTR prices.

EV (iX1) £60616
+ wall charger @ £1200
PHEV (X1) £52205

Petrol 2.0 (X1) £42805

I am averaging only 4800 miles pa and expect this to remain similar going forward with petrol costs on the X1 2.0 @ approx 45mpg est £700pa

I have no tax planning benefit by going EV and expect insurance/road tax difference to be minimal so can't see how it can make any financial sense at this time to switch to battery mode - I am willing to pay a premium to go EV (maybe £5k ish) but £20k difference for the EV at my annual mileage seems crazy.

Unless I am missing something?
