I would have thought that in this 'elf and safety gorn mad' and litigious world, that if there was the slightest risk or danger in using the 3pin granny charger, then VW wouldn't be supplying them with their electric vehicles.
Precisely, the box of tricks inline with the lead is full of stuff to safely monitor elasicrikerty not just some fancy coloured LED's, I once took a BMW one apart and even the moulded on 13amp plug had additional wires and a tiny heat monitor embedded in it feeding back to the control box, so if your garage socket overheated the plug would detect and switch off the lead...clever stuff
