Do you have PB Blaster products on your side of the pond? They have a penetrating catalyst that works amazingly well.

I was having a closer look at the studs yesterday, and at least four of the five remaining studs have a thread or two showing beyond the 'raised section' on the engine side. When trying a last tighten I was getting a real 'creak' from the bolts. This suggests to me that the nut was tight on the shoulder and I was actually moving the studs.. The implication is that a) there is movement in the studs (wishful thinking) and that b) this may be why the manifold was not sealing effectively.
