My S1 had a return spring (the one that coils around the common pedal shaft) after some years and whilst replacing the master cyl, I noticed the cyl had a decent internal return spring plus obviously the clutch diaphram is very strong, so left off the pedal spring, nice softer action and no problems during the remaining years of ownership

My 3.7, doesn't have the pedal spring and to be honest I can't remember if it was OE fitted or I just removed it, I seem to remember that quite a few people testing 3.7's used to comment on the very heavy clutch so the Factory left them off later cars (sometimes wink )
