We were just talking about this place last night. It seems many years ago the US government, thinking it had no value, sold to a private individual. He thought he would get rich mining the remnants of the meteor, but found nothing. He's long gone now, but his family still owns it and runs it as a tour attraction. NASA even paid them to use the site for training for the moon landings.
