Today I finally found time to clean and drive the Morgan after arriving back from the UK on 2nd August. The log book tells me the old girl has done just under 4,300 miles since we set out for Le Mans on 2nd July.

The run from Stotfold back to Vienna was done with four overnight stops: South Kensington, Amiens, Rheinland-Pfalz, and a small town in Bavaria. The run down the A16 from Calais to Amiens in the late afternoon was the best of it with brilliant light, little traffic and a sweet running car. The Amiens overnight stop was planned to allow a visit to the Australian national memorial at Villers-Bretonneux the next day. Emotional and humbled we then pushed on across France and into Germany, staying overnight at a small wine village (Kirchheim) in Rheinland-Pfalz.

A note to Brits crossing from France into Germany. Driving like a homicidal maniac once you are on German autobahns is optional, not compulsory. And if the traffic is heavy and the visibility poor in heavy rain then it might even be wise to lift off a bit. We couldn't help but note the number of UK plated cars behaving badly.

And then on to Bavaria in 36 degree heat. South of Nuremberg the generator began screaming "enough". The rear bearing had cooked. At a local garage we found mechanics who were suddenly enthused to be working on a real car. A new (Bosch overhauled) generator was freighted in and next morning we continued on in high temps to Vienna.

Final note. After its service at Techniques the car has never run better with lots of little problems fixed. I think it pays to get a proper Morgan workshop to go over your car now and then, even if you think you are able to do most maintenance yourself.

An amazing month of Morgan travel. Cheers. k
