Went for a picnic up in the Lakes, found a deserted beach near Ravenglass with a great added attraction. The MOD use it for shooting experimental shells out to sea. Once the coast was clear of shipping etc a shell was fired towards the Isle of Man, you could hear it travel out to sea until it landed on the water with a puff of black smoke to the right of the Isle of Man and then the returning sound wave hits you a few seconds later. Unfortunately, repeat firing was delayed for some time whilst a yacht sailed clear of the area. Apparently the Isle of Man residents plus the locals are quite used to this. Made for a very interesting and unusual day, for the first time I could fully understand and relate to scenes in war movies with people being able to hear an incoming shell, and what it sounds like.
