In Australia years ago I am sure you could click the filler so it kept going, now you have to hold it. I have seen people wedge their petrol cap in it and the attendant come racing out swearing at the top of his head. Supposedly if you are not holding it the fuel line is not earthed and more chance of a spark causing the place to go up.

No idea if there is any truth in the danger but no way could you leave a car like that here without getting in a stack of trouble.

That station was completely unattended as are so many on the continent nowadays. The hose was in the filler while I figured out how to pay. I never thought of trying to wedge the gun, maybe next time.
