Here in the UK if you pass your test on an auto you can't drive a manual on the road without retaking your test .... sadly, autos are becoming more and more common as younger driver seem less inclined to engage with the driving experience ... and less enamoured with cars in general .... they were freedon to us but just another consumer item to many now.

I tend to agree with automatics of the past being less than engaging, but many automatics today have paddle shifts etc that allow far more involvement in the gear selection than previously. I've never considered the lack of a clutch an impediment to enjoying driving a car, especially if you spend most of your time in urban commuter traffic, its actually a boon, Before cars it was bicycles that created that sense of independence.
