I rarely drive (where ever possible) a convertible car with the hood up for all the reasons you mention, as the structural integrity of a convertible is always a compromise, no matter how much additional structural bracing they try to build in for the missing roof. Even the best convertibles crash and bang far more than their coupe equivalents. Roof down wind roar tends to mask the unpleasantries...... even in a Morgan, the difference is between roof up or down is huge, even on quite smooth surfaces...............
