Just a very short trip from home today to the abandoned and mostly disappeared Second World War airbase of RAF Metfield, used by the 353rd Fighter Group and the 491st Heavy Bomber Group of the USAAF in WW2. I came across it the other day as I was cycling along a single track road known as Christmas Lane and saw what looked like old runways crossing the road. It has a fascinating history which includes a tragic major explosion that occurred when bombs which were being unloaded from lorries exploded without warning. 5 airmen lost their lives in the incident and many planes were damaged and destroyed. The photo shows what's left of one of the original service roads that ran between the ends of the two runways - now used as a farm track.
