If it's any help I always avoid as much of the M6 as I possibly can and drive:

Kidderminster
Bridgnorth
Telford
Whitchurch

Then take the A49 and get back on the M6 at junction 19. It only takes 45 minutes longer than if the motorway's clear (which it never is) and it's a nice drive.
